Decorating Kids’ Rooms On A Budget

I love looking through the Pottery Barn catalog. Who doesn’t  long for a beautifully decorated house… that is always spotless! ;-) The spotless part will never happen at my house but the awesome decor could – theoretically at least. We live on a budget and save money to splurge on fun trips so I don’t have a fortune to spend on decorating. The good news decorating on a budget (especially kids’ rooms) can be easy if you have an open mind and think outside the box.

Dollar Decorating Ideas

Dollar Store Shopping

From Pottery Barn to a dollar store might be a big leap but you can find cute and useful things at your local dollar store. I’ve found lots of vinyl wall stickers in a variety of themes. I love using vinyl wall stickers in my boys’ bedrooms. It’s an easy way to bring a fun design or theme in the room without the mess of paint and it can easily be updated as their interests change. I have also found great frames for displaying photos or art and organizing bins to help contain toys and art supplies.

Holiday Clearance Ideas

Holiday Clearance Shopping

I have bought some of my favorite kids decor items at Target during their holiday clearance sales. Elliot’s room is  decorated with Robots and Rockets, so the rocket ship costume I bought after Halloween at 90% is perfect hanging from his ceiling. I also found a cute robot bucket for his dresser that was actually an Easter basket. Nowadays Easter baskets come in a variety of themes and most don’t even seem Easter-ish. They are a great way to pick up fun organizers for your kiddo’s room.  I have also found fun piggy banks and vinyl wall stickers on clearance after Halloween. Valentine’s day clearance items are generally geared more towards girls because of the predominantly girl colors of the holiday but I always double-check… my boys like red too!

I like to be creative even though I’m not super talented, so I work with the skills I do have. ;-) Painting letters (to spell their name) is an easy way to personalize their room. I am also a fan of hanging fun curtains to create fun play areas or make things pretty (i.e. hide stuff). They are easy and cheap to make with extra fabric and sticky velcro. We even created a pirate themed light for Quinn’s nursey with templates and spray paint! And don’t forget about pinterest! There are tons of great ideas on pinterest and most have great how-to instructions!

Repurpose Furniture Ideas

Repurposed Furniture

Speaking of tutorials and easy pinterest projects. We just recently did two great projects. We converted Elliot’s crib into an art desk for both boys. It was super easy and practical! And we also made a headboard out of kitchen cabinet doors. We have the headboard in our master bedroom but the headboard idea could work well in a tween/teen room! When considering your furniture needs or wants, always think about what you can fix, update or repurpose  from your existing furniture. And if you know someone getting rid of furniture or see a super deal at a yard sale or on Craigslist, remember a little paint and effort can go a long way!

Do you have any tips for decorating kids’ rooms on a budget? I would love to hear them!
