I was Brave! Disney/Pixar’s Scotch Egg Experience

May 30, 2012 · 12 comments

What are the first words that come to mind when you think about Scotland?

I think of the Highlands, heather, castles and clans.  I would *LOVE* to visit Scotland one day, it’s history and my own ancestry makes it very appealing to me.

The one thing that is unappealing about Scotland for me is their food. Seriously, haggis and black pudding scare me.

Yesterday Disney/Pixar sent out two recipes in celebration of the of new animated movie Brave and neither one was haggis or black pudding. When I realized I had almost all the ingredients for the Scotch Egg Recipe, I decided to be BRAVE and try a strange new recipe!

Brave Scotch Egg Recipe

Since I am no expert in the kitchen, this was an interesting cooking adventure for me. It’s a rather simple recipe but I don’t work with raw sausage much, nor have I ever breaded and fried anything before.

Luckily my brother and sister in law were having dinner with us, so they helped me with the frying part.

And randomly they had already tried Scotch Eggs before on their honeymoon at an international farmer’s market in Hawaii.  So they were totally enthusiastic about my cooking experiment!

Of course I deviated from the above recipe a bit.

My Ingredients:

  • 6 hardboiled eggs
  • 1 raw egg
  • 2 (~0.8 lb) chicken sausages (from Sunflower Farmer’s Market)
  • 2/3 C skim milk
  • 1/2 C flour
  • 1/4 C breadcrumbs (homemade)
  • olive oil, I would use canola oil next time.
  • 1 t salt & 1/2 t pepper

  Brave Scotch Eggs Recipe

  1. I made bread crumbs from stale/old bread. I toasted it several times before crumbling it. I was worried that the crumbs seemed to vary widely between very fine and almost coarse, but it didn’t make a difference after they were fried.
  2. I set up my breading stations: (1) flour with salt and pepper, (2) milk and raw egg and (3) bread crumbs.
  3. I separated my sausage into 6 even balls. Then I flatten each ball into a thin pancake shape and wrapped it around a hard boiled egg. Working with raw sausage was very messy!
  4. Then I breaded each sausage/egg by dunking it into each of the 3 bowls in order: flour, milk, and bread crumbs.
  5. I started by “frying” the eggs in a frying pan with a little bit of olive oil.  Clearly, I have no experience frying anything. It browned the outside well but it didn’t cook the sausage well enough inside.
  6. After checking one, we fried them again in a pot with a lot more oil. They turned out great. Almost surprisingly well given my lack of breading and frying experience!
  7. We patted each one with a paper towel and lightly salted them. You can serve them with mustard but I really liked them plain!

Scotch Eggs 3

I’m glad I was BRAVE in the kitchen, we really enjoyed the Scotch Eggs and it was fun to try a new recipe. Plus they made an easy and unique appetizer before my Kale & White Bean Soup.

Disney/Pixar’s Brave comes out in theaters June 22nd. I wonder if we will see Merida and her family eating Scotch eggs in the movie?

That’s awesome! :) Can’t wait to be BRAVE and try them too! :) P.S. Scotland is AWESOME, but yes, some of the food was bit scary! I can saw with authority that black pudding is as repulsive as it sounds! LOL!
